🟥 Can you share a bit about your background and the journey that led you to becoming an artist?
I’ve enjoyed drawing since I was a child. After graduating from high school, I pursued a degree in painting at university. However, upon graduation, I stopped doing art and focus on my family’s business. (Later, I pursued a master’s degree in art theory, which deepened my understanding of art and unexpectedly enhanced my drawing skills).
🟥 Was there a defining moment or experience that solidified your decision to pursue art seriously?
About 4–5 years ago, a friend of mine invited me to create NFTs, which rekindled my passion for drawing. It’s easy as that lol.
🟥 Do you remember the first piece of art you created, and what inspired you to make it?
I can’t recall exactly what my first piece was, since I’ve been drawing since I was a child. However, in my childhood memories, I mostly drew things like comic books and created my own characters.
🟥 What inspires you the most when creating your art?
Probably dark fantasy from media and video games, cultures around the world, and most importantly, H.P. Lovecraft’s novels and all Lovecraftian stories. I’m so obsessed that I consider myself an instrument of an Eldritch god lmao. (“The Call of Cthulhu” and “Who Goes There” Thai localisation book cover, my artwork of course).
🟥 Are there specific activities, rituals, or moments that fuel your creativity?
The art I create these days is primarily based on source material. I usually conduct research and find references to ensure my work is authentic and true to the source, while incorporating my unique drawing style. That’s the fuel, if you ask me. Viewers who are familiar with the story behind my creations will appreciate the authenticity in my art. Well, at least I hope they will lol.
🟥 How would you personally define art, and what deeper meaning does it hold for you?
For me, art is about cause and effect. Every piece created must have its origin and reason for its creation. When the art you create has a tangible foundation and background, viewers can understand it clearly, giving that piece value and weight.
🟥 What part of the creative journey excites you the most — conceiving an idea, the act of creating, or finishing the piece?
It depends on the piece, really. Since I create art as my job and main source of income, some pieces feel like chores that I want to finish as quickly as possible. However, some are very fun to draw, and I get excited about the outcome when they’re finished. But most importantly, as a Lovecraftian artist, learning the story and finding ways to represent it in art is the beauty of it, I guess.
🟥 Do you follow a structured plan when creating art, or is your process more spontaneous?
Yes, I need to plan when creating art: researching the story and characters, finding references, drafting, and finalizing the process with the pen. (or watercolor in some piece)
🟥 What time of day do you feel the most creative, and why do you prefer that time for your work?
Recently, I usually draw in the afternoon, and importantly, outside of my home. Since it seems I can’t focus and create art when I’m surrounded by temptations such as video games and other distractions lol.
🟥 Do you listen to music while creating, and how does it influence your process?
I always listen to music when I create art. But I don’t think it influenced me anything, but it helped me draw smoother and not bore along the way.
🟥 Do you have any specific rituals or routines you follow before starting a new project?
Nothing worth mentioning, mostly it’s a routine that I must create art or draw.
It’s my job anyway.
🟥 What is the most challenging aspect of creating art, and how do you navigate those?
In my view, the most challenging thing is representing the story that I read in my style. It is the hardest to draw something from the story that is so surreal and conceptual.
🟥 What keeps you motivated during times when creativity feels like a struggle?
Money, for real lol. I am not a wealthy artist; my works don’t sell much and are not priced high. So, creating more and consistent works helps increase the chances I guess.
🟥 Can you share an experience or lesson that contributed the most to your growth as an artist?
From my own experience? Focus on your own study and make an effort to understand the history of art. Trust me, it will help you grow as an artist. Both in mental and skill.
🟥 Is there a piece of advice you received that completely changed the way you create or think about art?
I have always thought that art is about emotion and feeling before cause and effect. However, after deciding to pursue a bachelor’s degree in art at university, my perspective on this changed. Emotions and feelings alone cannot create artwork that the general public can understand. Cause and effect should be the essential foundation for creating every piece. What is this work created for, and does the final piece convey that to the viewer? That is the important principle of artwork.
🟥 When you view a piece of art, what qualities or emotions do you look for?
The quality of the effort that an artist puts into their art is the most important aspect, and that piece can truly represent what the artist is aiming for.
🟥 How do you perceive art’s purpose and its impact on individuals and society?
I don’t think it has to be that deep or impactful to the world or society that much. Art is the tool that artists represent themself and ideas. It’s already important enough.
🟥 In your view, what do concepts like “passion” and “uniqueness” represent in art?
Passion of the artist will reflect on their art automatically. And uniqueness in art comes from trial and error that artists have to succeed after the year of creating multiple arts.
🟥 What are the non-negotiable essentials in your workspace?
Nothing worth mentioning.
🟥 Do you have a favorite tool or object in your studio that holds sentimental value?
Nothing worth mentioning.
🟥 What’s the one thing you always need by your side while creating art?
Except paper and pen? Pencil and eraser of course lol
🟥 Who are the artists or people you admire the most, and why?
No one specifically. These days digital methods and AI are all over the place, and that kind of technology can make someone into an artist easily. That’s the reason II alway appreciate traditional artists of all kinds.
🟥 Imagine you could create a piece of art in collaboration with someone from history. Who would you choose and why?
H.P. Lovecraft himself of course! (But I’m sure he will not agree since I’m Asian, and he’s a racist lol) Most of his novels don’t have illustration art. So I want to be his Illustrator.
🟥 What’s your superpower?
To stay positive most of the time. I guess it can be a superpower, especially in this day and society.
🟥 What does success as an artist mean to you — recognition, impact, or something else entirely?
In my opinion, just making a living by your own creation is enough. Recognition and fame will come after automatically if you are consistent in your own art and style.
🟥 Can you tell us about a piece of your art that holds a special place in your heart and why it’s so meaningful to you?
Probably this, the first 2 arts I create when I go back to drawing after years since graduating. It is also the first 2 NFT drops in my life, art that represent Lovecraftian elements and themes of Cryptocurrency.
🟥 What are your dreams or goals for the future?
Survive. Yes, for real lol.
I hope I can truly make a living by my own art 100%.
🟥 How would you define a “creative person”?
Who can create art with the consistency of their own unique style.
🟥 In your opinion, what are the positive and negative differences between being an artist today and being an artist a century ago?
Back then when art style defined an era for an artist, there’s not much freedom in creativity. But today is contemporary art time, there’s freedom in creativity and you can do what you want, anything you want. But I feel we lost some pure artsy vibe from that old time I think lol, don’t know how to explain it.
🟥 In your opinion, what are the best and most challenging aspects of being an artist?
The most challenging thing is financial for sure, not all artists can make a living purely by their own craft. But the best thing is, if you can truly thrive, you got the best job in the world.
🟥 What advice would you give to aspiring artists who want to build a meaningful career?
In my humble opinion, find the damn job lol.
But I’m not telling you to quit pursuing art, but I’ll tell you to find a stable, decent job. And find time to create art and pursue that passion if you truly mean it. Passion needs money, use money from the job to pursue that.
